The goal isn’t rudeness but rather a form of emotional camouflage. When implementing this technique, you need to respond to provocations with minimal emotional engagement. For example, offer brief, factual responses rather than detailed explanations or emotional reactions. Keep your tone neutral and avoid animated facial expressions or body language that might signal your investment in the conversation.
This constant sense of urgency keeps you in a reactive state, making it hard to focus on your own needs or maintain emotional balance. These comments often come with a smile or a shrug — “I’m just being real” or “You’re too sensitive” — but their impact is anything but casual. They might say things like, “I guess I just don’t matter to you,” or “After all I’ve done for you…” when you set a boundary or prioritise your own needs.
Unfortunately, if you’re a highly sensitive person who doesn’t know how to set boundaries, it’s quite likely that you’re already surrounded by energy vampires left, right, and center. While healthy relationships typically involve a natural give-and-take of emotional support, energy vampires may often take more than they give. When balance is missing, you may notice feelings of emotional burnout or fatigue. The term “energy vampires” is an informal way of describing interactions that feel one-sided or draining.
Energy Vampires Don’t Really Listen
Life brings us into contact with all kinds of people. Some of those people leave us feeling inspired and uplifted, while others seem to drain every last drop of our energy. Though they are often chronic complainers, these “energy vampires” come in many other forms too, such as the drama magnet, the chronic critic, or the perpetual victim.
Once you notice an energy vampire sucking too much out of you, here are some ways to deal with the situation (Orloff, 2017; Rutherford et al., 2014). I read Parts I and II, thank you so much for your work. Would you consider writing a Part III that offered up many examples and details? It’s hard for me to truly understand when I’m the vampire or someone else is or perhaps there are dualing vampires. I mostly want to be more conscious of my own vampiric behavior.
Don’t Give Them An Inch
Along with this chapter’s strategies from The Empath’s Survival Guide, I strongly recommend that you continue your own emotional healing work. The Law of Attraction states that we attract what we give off, both positive and negative. As a result, you can attract and absorb negative emotions from others that you haven’t resolved in yourself. That’s why you may be extra sensitive to some people’s energy compared to others. The more you heal your fears, anger, and anxieties, the less likely you will be to take those on.
But as long as this speaker unconsciously shames the audience for their laziness and feelings of deficiency, the speaker feels elevated, abundant, and competent. In contrast, the audience looks up to him or her with feelings of awe. For example, take any famous motivational speaker. This public personality might be running away from their laziness and feelings of lack. Because this trauma occurs mainly before our conscious mind develops, we don’t fully know the trauma we endured. As Dr. Bessel van der Kolk notes, The Body Keeps the Score.
- No matter what kinds of energy-draining situations you encounter, you now have tools, perspective, and self-trust to navigate them more consciously.
- Energy vampires and emotional vampires (those who particularly deplete your emotions) are attracted to the openness and loving hearts of empaths and all sensitive people.
- Energy vampires tend to leave subtle but consistent signals in your emotional and energetic field.
- This is an extension of the previous point, but also allows you more flexibility should you need to exit before your pre-determined time.
These behaviors are not necessarily intentional, and individuals may be unaware of their impact. Learning to notice these patterns and practicing ways to protect your well-being can support your mental health. Have you ever felt unusually exhausted after spending time with someone? Perhaps you’ve felt emotionally drained or in a lower mood after being around a certain person. If this sounds familiar to you, it’s possible that you’ve encountered an energy vampire.
If you’re an empath, healer, or highly intuitive person, your natural compassion and presence can make you especially affected by these dynamics. That’s why setting clear energetic and emotional boundaries isn’t about being harsh. And what’s more, protecting your own energy ultimately benefits everyone in your life. When you maintain healthy reserves, you can show up fully for the connections that truly matter. Your energy is precious – worth protecting, worth nurturing, and worth sharing mindfully with those who reciprocate your care. This is an extension of the previous point, but also allows you more flexibility should you need to exit before your pre-determined time.
This person doesn’t respect your time, space, or energy. They may text late at night, show up unannounced, or make frequent requests that leave you feeling depleted. If your energy is always available, others may lean on it more than they should. That’s why learning to set clear, loving boundaries isn’t about shutting people out… it’s about protecting your well-being and allowing your energy to be shared intentionally. Up next, we’ll talk about why you might be attracting energy vampires in the first place (and what to do about it).
Energy Vampire Vs Trauma Dumping
If you have few friends, it might be important to consider how you relate to others and if the number of friends is a factor of that. But that doesn’t mean people with a small or close-knit group of friends are automatically energy vampires. Dealing with a person who “sucks” the energy out of you can be frustrating. And those who consider themselves empaths or a highly sensitive person may be affected by energy vampires more than others. To drain the most energy from you, energy vampires will shift the attention of the discussion to themselves, turning your dismay into their emotional buffet.
I hated it when my depressed mother held me down and tickled me- I used to go limp. Now, I imagine myself looking into her eyes and just saying ‘no’. I do this when I am feeling domineered by a depressed person. Eventually I started reading it again from the beginning, but read more here https://www.reddit.com/r/dating_apps/comments/1wit0jx/has_anyone_tried_sameagedates/ thoroughly this time, earlier today.
